What is your view about the social responsibility of healthcare organizations?
Social responsibility is an ethical theory that requires people to fulfill their civic duty and perform actions that benefit the greater percentage of people in society. Social responsibility in healthcare means that health facilities have an ethical mandate to engage in beneficial activities to the general population. This includes delivering quality care services to all who are entitled to it. The implication is that it is not enough for healthcare facilities to offer quality services at competitive prices and using modern technology. Still, they should work to earn the respect of customers, competitors, and society at large. In my view, the adoption of social responsibility by healthcare facilities could be a bold step to increase competitiveness and protect the external image. For instance, healthcare facilities should adopt better waste management methods. They should also use renewable sources of energy, and participate in community-building activities.
Do you think healthcare organizations should include their social obligations and social policies in their mission statements? Why or why not?
A mission statement is a statement or two used by organizations to explain the purpose of its existence in simple and concise terms. A good mission statemen should be clear, concise, and reflect the business strategy. I think healthcare organizations should include their social obligation and social policies as part of their mission statements. This is because defining a mission statement is the first component of the organization’s strategic management process. Additionally, a mission statement establishes the organization’s identity, what it does, and where it is headed. Such healthcare organizations have a clear goal and publicly communicate their commitment to the customers and society. Moreover, this would help ensure that such healthcare organizations do not engage in unethical practices. Examples of unethical practices include the use of fossil fuels and the burning of solid medical wastes APA style
