Race Culture and Identity in Social WorkWelcome to Module 10!  This is our final module in the course.  We will be wrapping up the course by looking at race, culture, and identity, as it impacts the life cycle stages.  We will specifically look at how we as social workers can help those in each of the stages and will practice questions that can be found on your licensure exam.

By the end of this session students will be able to:

  • Describe the impact of social, political, and economic factors on young adulthood

  • Discuss young adult development in diverse social environments

  • Understand the impact of racial bias on the transition to adulthood

Week 10- Common Assignment Part II

Week 10- Common Assignment Part II:

  • Begin with a brief description of the individual whom you selected, including information such as age, gender, sexual orientation identity, race, cultural/ethnic background, religion, and socioeconomic status. Identify how each of these elements of their positionality confers either privilege or oppression (or both) in their particular context. (Expected length, 1 page) 4 pts.

  • Present a summary of the individual’s life course thus far using the concepts of the life course perspective. Apply the concepts of the Life Course Perspective to the client’s life course description (transitions, trajectories, life events, turning points, cohort, and cohort effects) of the individual. Be sure to define, label, and clearly apply each of these concepts. (Expected length 2-3 pages) 4 pts.

  • How has this person demonstrated resilience throughout their lifecycle?  Discuss how this person changed as a result of trauma, either post-traumatic growth or lack thereof. Include at least one reference to a relevant source that is not on the syllabus for this course, properly integrated and cited according to APA format rules. (Expected length 1 – 2 pages) 4 pts.

Consult the literature regarding the individual’s race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, any issues the individual may have had to face, etc. All articles cited for this assignment MUST be from peer-reviewed professional journals) in your discussion. A minimum of four (4) references from peer-reviewed journal articles are required. In addition, you may use government websites for data/statistics.

  • The use of direct quotes should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. Use a direct quote only when you are unable to paraphrase or summarize. Only brief quotes are acceptable for this assignment.

  • YOU MUST FOLLOW APA format: Double-space; 12 pt. font, one-inch margins, proper referencing both in-text and on a Reference list). There must be a Title Page and Reference Page.  2 pts.

  • Follow page length guidelines: Papers should be 5 – 8 pages excluding References and Title page

  • CONFIDENTIALITY IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE: BE SURE TO DISGUISE ANY IDENTIFYING INFORMATION.

  • PROOFREAD YOUR PAPER BEFORE HANDING IT IN. Do not count on being allowed to “redo” your paper or appeal your grade unless your instructor specifically allows this. APA
