Nursing Insights from King’s Goal Attainment Theory
Findings from literature search
From the literature search, I found that Imogene King’s Theory of Goal Attainment is based on four main elements. The first element proposes that health is attained through appropriate nurse-patient relationship. This strengthens the relationship between providers and patients, which is helpful in improving care outcomes. The second element is that nurses and patients need to have a mutual understanding about each other. Thirdly, the theory provides that the goals and function of nurses and patients should always in line with each other. Lastly, nurses have a role to ensure that they use their skills and knowledge to establish relationships and set goals in care.
Also, the research for literature revealed that the Theory of Goal Attainment has three main systems; personal, interpersonal, and social systems. In the personal system, each individual is considered a unique being who is in constant interaction with the environment. Perception is an important dimension of the personal system and each person needs to have an accurate perception of his/her own and others’ personal systems. Interpersonal system is created by the interactions between two or more people.

An example of such interactions is the patient-provider relationships, which necessitates understanding of concepts such as communication, transaction, and role. The contribution of the interpersonal system to care quality is much greater than that of the personal and social systems. The social system is responsible for providing social interactions and communications in schools, workplaces, and organizations. The social system helps nurses to manage their caring roles and attain their professional goals in hospital-based caring systems. It also helps them to possess a suitable status in the public as a public health nurse.
The concept of Goal Attainment as proposed by Imogene King has been used the same way in all the literatures reviewed. In all the articles, the concept explains the barriers to goal attainment. Some of the factors stated in all the articles that affect goal attainment include roles, stress, space, and time.
Which nursing theory best fits your personal nursing concepts? Explain how you came to this decision.
The theory that best fits my personal nursing concept is Benner’s Model of Skill Acquisition. This is because Benner’s Model is a practical approach and sees experience as the only difference between a novice and an expert nurse. Therefore, it provides that the only way to improve competence, mastery, and build skills nurses need to gain experience.
Consider aspects of the related work that would strengthen your concept map.
Lastly, the concept of Goal Attainment as proposed by Imogene King can be strengthened by setting goals and making decisions and developing approaches to achieve those goals. APA
