Institute of Medicine (IOM) or the National Academy of Medicine, as currently called, is
a non-profit organization established in 1972 under Tribhuvan University. IOM was established
to provide evidence-based approaches and recommendations for public health facilities. IOM is
also responsible for training health care workers in all categories as needed in the United States.
Since it was established, the organization has developed 12 campuses spread across the country,
with three of them in Kathmandu valley and nine outside the Kathmandu valley. This paper aims
to review a report released by the Institute of medicine in 2010.
Four messages are outlined in the IOM report and explain why these are significant to
nursing practice.
The firs key message highlighted in the report is that nurses should be allowed to practice
in their areas of education and training (Shalala et al., 2011). Nurses' ability to practice fully in
their profession is limited by regulations, policy, and historical barriers. Additionally, the system
of health care in the United States' is fragmented. This means that American residents face
barriers accessing quality and affordable health care. The second key message in the report is
that nurses should ensure that they achieve higher education and training levels (Shalala et al.,
2011). To accomplish this, nurses need to train in institutions that employ improved systems of
education. The IOM 2010 report provides that an improved education system would be help
impact the current and future nurses. This is because it would help ensure that nurses provide
safe, quality, and patient-specific care services (Shalala et al., 2011). Further, an improved health
system encourages the use tools that greatly improve the quality of care, including information

The third key message featured in the IOM 2010 report is that nurses should collaborate
with other health care professionals, such as physicians, to deliver high-quality care (Shalala et
al., 2011) . This is often referred to as a multidisciplinary approach to health care. The different

specialization areas. This results in increased access to quality and patient-centered care. The
fourth and last key message in the report is that data collection and information management are
crucial elements for effective planning of human resources and policy development (Shalala et
al., 2011). In other words, health care organizations should analyze factual information before
making major care decisions.

nurse practice. This would help ensure that the unique abilities of nurses are tapped for use in
American health care. Additionally, the IOM report recommends that nurse educators employ an

2011). This would help ensure that the nursing profession's current and future generations gain

Nurses are directly involved in the delivery of care to patients. Therefore, nurses need
regular training to meet the aging and diverse needs of patients. This would be important for
ensuring that they improve the quality of care and positive care outcomes (Shalala et al., 2011).
It is also projected that the number of older individuals will make up the majority segment in the
United States in the near future. This means that nurses need specialized training to meet the
needs of the ageing population in the country. Nurses with vast knowledge and skills provide
better care services and increase the level of patient satisfaction (Shalala et al., 2011).
Discuss the significance of professional development, or lifelong learning, and its relevance
in caring for diverse populations across the life span and within the health‐illness
continuum.
Professional development entails all the training, education, and qualifications required
by individuals to succeed in their careers. It is significant because it helps equip individuals with
the current knowledge and skills needed to perform well in an increasingly changing work
environment (Shalala et al., 2011). In other words, health care professionals learn new methods
of handing patients, treatment approaches, and current evidence-based practices through
professional development. Additionally, professional development helps health care workers to
stay up to date, experience personal growth, professional growth, and keep their certification
active. Professional development is also crucial in the provision of care to diverse populations.
This is because health care workers in different ranks can learn other methods and approaches
unique to the people.

Discuss how nurses can assist in effectively managing patient care within an evolving health
care system.

The most effective way for nurses to manage delivering quality care to patients within an
evolving care system is through medical research and regular training. Medical research helps
health care workers to learn more about human health. In other words, research helps care
workers to understand how best they can deliver quality services to various populations.
Research also provides information about trends and risk factors associated with a particular
disease and treatment outcomes. Therefore, through medical research and training, health care
workers only provide health care services that are safe and result in better outcomes.
In conclusion, the IOM aims to provide evidence-based approach, train healthcare
workers, and provide health recommendations in the public health facilities in the United States.
The IOM report contains comments on four main messages that effects nursing education and
nursing leadership directly. It recommends a review of the education system to have a system
that allows nurses to practice freely and prioritize their safety during practice. Expanding the
nursing roles and education is essential as it helps increase the quality of care services given to
patients. The most effective way for nurses to deliver quality care services in an evolving
