Define Freytag’s pyramid. (Don’t list all the stages here. Just explain what the Pyramid is and what it describes).
State your thesis — that you will use story X to illustrate the seven stages of Freytag’s pyramid.
In each body paragraph:
Name and carefully define one stage of traditional plot structure. You may paraphrase or quote directly from the lecture or handout.
Set up the upcoming quotation or summary from your chosen short story.
Give an example of this specific stage from the short story you’ve chosen. If possible, quote directly from the text.
Connect the example you’ve just given in step 2 to the definition in step 1. Connecting a key term from the definition to key words from the example may help cement this connection.
Explain how Freytag’s pyramid shapes our understanding of the story as a whole.
Freytag’s pyramid is a paradigm that outlines seven key steps that define successful storytelling. The pyramid is among the oldest structures and was developed in the mid-19 th century by Gustav Freytag, a German playwright. Freytag’s pyramid helps play writers organize their thoughts and ideas constructively when describing the play’s main problem, the rising action, and the climax of the story. This is because every play, film, or story follows a particular dramatic structure from its start to the end. Interestingly, most of the best-selling authors used Freytag’s pyramid to write stories even without knowing. Freytag’s pyramid argued that compelling stories should have two broad sections, one the play, and two the counterplay section.
Exposition is the first element of Freytag’s pyramid. The storyteller uses the exposition
element to set the pace of the story and introduce readers to the characters, the tone, and the
mood of the story. Exposition is conveyed through flashbacks, dialogues,
backstories, or background details. Edgar Allan Poe gives a
flashback of how he had borne a thousand injuries from his friend Fortunato. However, he
vowed to revenge when Fortunato ventured upon insult. The tone of this story is
revenge. APA style
