Gap in Practice or Problem: Patients are not compliance to? Discuss
their prescribed psychotropic medications non-adherence
and nursing staff are not knowledgeable about strategies to
teach patients for self-care management to increase
medication adherence.
Purpose of the Project: To develop an education program to
increase the nurses’ knowledge about factors related to
patients’ nonadherence to their prescribed psychotropic
agents and how to use the Nursing Assessment of
Medication Acceptance (NAMA). Scale to assess patients’
nonadherence.

Project Question: Will a staff education program about
evidence-based information about medication adherence and
the use of the Nursing Assessment of Medication
Acceptance (NAMA) tool, increase the nurses’ knowledge
to teach patients about self-care management for adherence
to psychotropic medications?

Brief Summary of Evidence
Evidence Overview:
Integrating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy CBT and
Motivational Interviewing MI improved medication
adherence.
Various interventions including CBT and MI; improved
patients’ adherence to their prescribed psychotropic
medications.
Nursing Psychoeducation Program (NPE) can improve inpatients
with schizophrenia’s acceptance of medication and level of
knowledge about it.

Program objective:
To empower nurses with comprehensive knowledge to guide
and support patients through evidence-based strategies,
facilitating effective education on self-care practices,
particularly adherence to prescribed psychotropic medications.
Purpose of the Project
The goal is to develop an educational program. This program will increase nurses’ knowledge. It will focus on factors affecting patient non-adherence. Nurses will learn to use the Nursing Assessment of Medication Acceptance (NAMA) scale.
