Effectiveness of Flibanserin drug
The efficacy of Flibanserin drug has continued to produce heated debates since it was
approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2015. Despite concerns from
critics, Flibanserin was the only approved drug in the treatment of HSDD as of 2015 meaning
that it is safe for consumption. Many studies have been conducted to investigate the efficacy
of the drug and the majority have positive results. Studies show that the use of Flibanserin
drug increases both FSFI and sexual activity desire scores as explained below.
Flibanserin drug helps bring back the desire for sex in women like Viagra does in men
(Fisher, & Pyke, 2017). It should, however, be noted that Flibanserin is not the same as
Viagra because men who use Viagra have erectile dysfunctions and not lacking desire for
sex. Women with HSDD, on the other hand, have nothing wrong with their genitalia as they
can become aroused and have intercourse and even orgasm. The only problem in women is
that they feel no motivation to have sex. Flibanserin drug is used by such women to try and
turn their desire circuit inside the brain on. A study conducted on women with HSDD found
that the parts of the brain responsible for monitoring the internal emotions states were
overactive when the women watched erotic videos (Gola et al., 2016). This shows that the brains of the women were focused on judging whether watching erotic videos was
appropriate instead of living the erotic moment. Flibanserin drug is effective and acts on the
neurons that are controlled by serotonin and dopamine neurotransmitters. The drug makes the
neurotransmitters to kick motivation into gear.
A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials conducted to
assess the efficacy and safety of flibanserin for the treatment of HSDD in women found that
the drug enhances sexual desires in women (Jasper et al., 2016). The meta-analysis
summarized 8 studies; 5 that were published and 3 that were unpublished. The studies
investigated the efficacy and safety of Flibanserin drug for the treatment of HSDD in more
than 6,000 women. The analysis found that the use of Flibanserin drug results to one-half
additional satisfying sexual events (SSE) per month (Jasper et al., 2016). This analysis found
that the drug is effective among women who do not drink alcohol, take oral contraceptives, or
fluconazole (Jasper et al., 2016). The use of Flibanserin drug is, therefore, recommended by
this meta-analysis because it is effective in increasing sexual activity desires among women
with HSDD. Read more
Flibanserin drug is more effective in the treatment of HSDD in women compared to
placebo. The use of Flibanserin drug among premenopausal women with general HSDD was
found to increase the rate of satisfying sexual events per month by an additional 1.6-2.5
(Fisher, & Pyke, 2017). This means that the sexual activity desire in the women increased
after the intake of the drug. On the other hand, women treated placebo were found to increase
the rate of satisfying sexual events per month by an additional 0.8-2.5 (Fisher, & Pyke, 2017).
The findings clearly show that the use of flibanserin drug has better results compared to the
use of a placebo. Effectiveness of Flibanserin drug;
Between 46 and 60 percent of women with HSDD reported change after the use of
Flibanserin drugs (Baid & Agarwal, 2018). The satisfying sexual events per month (SSE) and
the female sexual function index (FSFI) of women who take Flibanserin drug increases by an
additional one and a half per month. This means that prolonged use of the drug use can
reverse the HSDD condition. According to Baid & Agarwal (2018), the drug is taken once
daily at bedtime and can take between 4 weeks and 8 weeks to produce results
Flibanserin drug increases the production of dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE)
in the PFC (Baid & Agarwal, 2018). Dopamine is a chemical that is found naturally in the
human body. The function of dopamine is to send a signal from the body to the brain.
Norepinephrine is a substance that is released predominantly from the ends of sympathetic
nerve fibers. Its function is to increase the force of skeletal muscle contraction and the rate
and force of contraction of the heart. Norepinephrine and dopamine are responsible for
increasing sexual desire and arousal in women. The use of Flibanserin drug is associated with
significant improvement in the genital symptoms HAM-D item at weeks 4, 6, and 8 of use
(Baid & Agarwal, 2018). Effectiveness of Flibanserin drug;
