Discuss the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for BPD and APD

To be diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, a person must meet the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. This includes chronic feelings of emptiness, emotional instability in reaction to day-to-day events, and frantic efforts to avoid abandonment. Also, unstable self-image, impulsive behavior in at least two areas that are potentially self-damaging, difficulty controlling anger. Furthermore, unstable and intense interpersonal relationships, recurrent suicidal behavior, and stress-related paranoid ideation.

The DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for Antisocial Personality Disorder include four categories. Additionally, criteria A is disregarding and violating others’ rights since age 15, such as failure to obey the law, deception, self-amusement, a pattern of irresponsibility, and frequently assaulting others. Moreover, criteria B is that the person suspected to have BPD is at least 18 years. Criteria C is that the symptoms exhibited by the patient were present before age 15. The last criterion for diagnosing this condition is that the antisocial behavior is not caused by schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

A borderline personality disorder is diagnosed in late adolescence or early adulthood, before 28 years. Similarly, antisocial personality disorder is diagnosed before 18 years. APA
