Coercive Persuasion and Change Management Challenges
Complete the following case study.
Consider the emergence of the electronic medical record (EMR) and its impact on caregiver behavior and the use of paper. Giving up or at least minimizing the printing of reports and using of notebooks in favor of the electronic devices is a significant challenge for all caregivers.
- Removing printers and the supply of paper is an example of coercive persuasion. What other examples have occurred in your organization?,
- Do you agree that change or learning occurs best through coercive persuasion? Why? Why not?
Here is an article for review:
What other examples have occurred in your organization?
In the current organization I work, they have installed surveillance cameras with audio to monitor employees in the lounge areas (employee and physician, except the anesthesia lounge), hallways, supply areas, and in the operating room suite.
It was told to me that the reason for the cameras was because they were having issues with the permanent staff treating the travelers bad. I’m not convinced that is the case because we do not go into the doctor’s lounge. No one actually know why the cameras are in place but know that they came to work, and the cameras were there. The education coordinator stated that she asked for voceras and they put in cameras. The real reason for the cameras with audio is unknown but does cause a strain on the work environment.
Do you agree that change or learning occurs best through coercive persuasion? Why? Why not?
I do not agree that change occurs best through coercive persuasion. It causes staff to withdraw and find ways to rebel and decrease the staff’s commitment to the organization because there is a sense of the organization. Hence, not trusting the employee to uphold the organizations morals and values and devalues the employee as the educated professional that he/she is .
Lastly, because the employees know that the organization do not have trust in them and likewise the trust for the organization is not as it should be. APA
