The Baldrige Excellence Framework is a comprehensive and structured approach to organizational performance management and excellence. It was developed by Dr. Curt Reimann in late summer and fall of 1987 and is named after Malcolm Baldrige, the Secretary of Commerce from 1981 until his death in 1987. The framework views an organization as a system and provides a structured way to understand, manage, and improve it. The main focus of the framemwork is improving organizational performance, customer and stakeholder satisfaction, and operational effectiveness. The framework is thus divided into seven categories for assessing and improving organizational performance.
The first category is focused on leadership and helps to examines how the actions of senior leaders guide and sustain the organization. The second category is startegy and is concerned with the approach used by the healthcare organization to develop strategic objectives and action plans, implements them, and adjusts when necessary. Category three is customer focus, which assess the methods that organizations apply to engages and interact with customers and determines their level of satisfaction. The next category is measurement, analysis, and knowledge management. This category helps to examine how the use of data and information supports key organization processes and the organization’s performance.
The other category is Workforce, which is concerned with how an organization manages its workforce and how it fosters a high-performance culture. This is to ensure that all the organizational goals are met. The other category is Operations, which ssesses the management of key organization processes and operational performance. The last is results category, which evaluates the outcomes achieved in key areas such as customer satisfaction, market performance, and workforce engagement among others. The Baldrige Excellence Framework uses a point-based scoring system to evaluate the organization’s performance.
