Autocratic and Servant Leadership in Nursing

c) Autocratic leadership

Autocratic leadership or authoritarian leadership is an approach to leadership that focuses on results and team efficiency. ,Unlike democratic leaders, autocratic leaders do not consult anyone and make decisions all by themselves or with the input of a trusted few. In other words, this approach to leadership focuses on the command by the leader and control of the followers. Also, autocratic leaders provide clear expectations for what needs to be done, when it should be done, and how it should be done. Therefore, they expect staff to do exactly what they are asked without question. Autocratic leadership often works in situations that require error-free outcomes or situations with potential time constraints. Although autocratic leadership is less creative, it is considered effective when making decisions in times of emergency or situations requiring quick decisions.

Moreover, autocratic leadership effectively ensures team members complete critical tasks within the allocated time. Whenever this model is
used, the staff are left feeling neglected and invisible.

d) Servant leadership

Servant leadership is an approach to leadership that was developed in the 1970s by Robert K. Greenleaf. In servant leadership, a leader puts serving staff above all
other things. Unlike other leadership styles where the staff serves the leader, in the servant leadership approach, a leader serves the staff. Leaders using servant
leadership focus on creating an environment that supports the team to thrive and achieve the highest results. The leaders believe that employees who are motivated and fulfilled increase productivity and efficiency. A servant leader should be a listener, be committed to the growth of people, and have empathy, stewardship, persuasion, and foresight.  This type of leadership is commonly used in business as it creates an environment where employees feel respected, valued, and appreciated. The servant leadership approach helps create a strong work culture centered on staff morale and engagement. APA
