Notes about the first two episodes of the TV series
The first series of Mystery Road was directed by the Radians 1998 filmmaker Rachel
Perkins. Episode 1 of the series is about the mysterious disappearance of an indigenous teenage
boy, Marley, from an outback cattle station. An indigenous detective identified as Jay Swan is
tasked with the responsibility to investigate the disappearance. When Jay Swan arrives home, he
thought that the investigation task would be easy, just a three-day job. From the investigations,
Jay found the injustice committed is a potential threat to the fabric holding together the whole
community. Marley was brutally murdered, and his body was found under the highway trucking
route out of town.
The investigations reveal that before the indigenous teenager was murdered, there must
have been a force. However, it is not clear who did it and why they did it. With the complexities involved, Jay Swan is forced to work with a local police officer, Emma James, who knows the
town well. Over time, Jay Swan’s daughter, Crystal, arrives in the town for what appears to be
running from her troubles at home. Jay turns the focus on a gentleman called Tony Ballantyne,
the owner of a cattle station. Intelligence reveals that Emma James is a sister to Tony Ballantyne
and that the land in which the poor boy was found belongs to the family. This prompts Jay to
wonder why Emma concealed this from the word go. Does this mean that she is trying to cover
her brother? Might she also be part of the case? (Mystery Road Trailer, Episode 1).
The second episode begins in a tense mood where a bus arrives in Patterson, and who is
on board? It is Larry Dime, Marley's uncle, who is out on parole. On the same bus is Georgia
Clarke, a teenage girl who saw the news and upon hearing the mention of Simon or Reese, she
recognized him as her boyfriend, who went missing two years before. In this episode, the
differences between Jay and Emma are vividly clear. It dawns on Jay that Marley and Reese
checked out a working rifle from a cattle station but never returned it. MLA
