In my current role as a healthcare provider, Health Information Technology (HIT) plays an essential part in my daily practice. I interact with electronic health records (EHRs) constantly to document patient encounters, review lab results, track medications, and coordinate care across interdisciplinary teams. HIT enhances communication, increases efficiency, and provides access to real-time data, which supports clinical decision-making and improves patient safety. The EHR system also facilitates reminders for preventive care, alerts for potential drug interactions, and standardized documentation that ensures continuity of care.

In my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project, which focuses on improving cultural competence among healthcare providers at JC Health Group, HIT has served as both a tool and a barrier. On one hand, HIT has supported my project by allowing the integration of educational modules into the organization’s learning management system (LMS), which enables staff to access cultural competency training online at their convenience. Additionally, I’ve used data extracted from the EHR to identify disparities in patient outcomes among diverse populations, which helped to inform the focus of the intervention. On the other hand, limitations in HIT infrastructure, such as the lack of built-in cultural assessment tools and inconsistent data entry practices, made it more difficult to track improvements in culturally competent care.

Overall, my experience with HIT has highlighted its potential to enhance quality improvement initiatives but has also underscored the importance of proper training, user-friendly design, and institutional support. Moving forward, I see HIT as a critical element in advancing patient-centered care, and I advocate for its continual refinement to better support culturally responsive, evidence-based practice. Integrating informatics into clinical care and quality improvement has not only strengthened my project outcomes but has also emphasized the growing need for nurse leaders to be proficient in using HIT effectively.
